Space: Above and Beyond

Someone passed a DVD along to me and if you can find it, there's an old show that was on TV for one season (on Fox I think) back a while ago in the mid-90's called Space: Above and Beyond. Essentially it's SciFi but it follows a group of "space Marines" through a war. Some of the writing is highly contrived and the special effects and only so-so but there are some nuggets of pure writing gold in these. For example one of the episodes (ep. 22, near the end of the season called Sugar Dirt) follows the group after they were ostensibly abandoned by their carrier group. For those familiar with the history of Guadalcanal or WWII there's a touchstone there.  Surprisingly there's a lot of tie in to WWI and WWII. For example it makes reference to the Christmas Truce in WWI which, coincidentally, I was also thinking about recently.

if you're into SciFi or just into repeating history, it's worth a look.

Christmas Truce -

I have some friends who are teachers. I have some freinds who are historians. I'm not sure who among them knows this story, but I think more people should. As Christmas nears in a year of war, it should be something on everyone's mind.

Peace is not won or lost. It is earned with the blood of the few who die for the many. It is kept in the souls of those who live on, because those who lie dead do not complain.

For those teachers I do know, your students should understand the legacy of war and peace of their history.

2girls1cup

I have to admit, I haven't seen the video, I saw a description when it first came out and figured I was blind enough already, didn't need to be that blind. But if you feel like throwing up a little in your mouth or a lot on the floor and you aren't familiar with it, feel free to google for 2girls1cup.

That said, for those of you who are familiar, http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2118/2086073362_b9ca71a07e_o.jpg I realize you can bullshit a lot in college, but I'm glad to see there are limits to bullshit even in Freshmen arts classes.
